Ofgem Hits British Gas with £11.1 Million Energy Efficiency Fine
Energy efficiency is an issue we harp on about a lot here at Love Energy Savings and today has seen an unprecedented fine dished out to the UK’s biggest energy supplier, British Gas. The firm had been given a deadline for insulating a quota of British homes and they failed to adhere to this, resulting in this latest reprimand from the energy watchdog.
The fine is the result of failure to comply with two energy efficiency targets, dating back four years. Although British Gas got there in the end and hit the targets, It was all too little too late. Customers from across the United Kingdom ended up missing out on the benefits of these energy efficiency targets during the winter of 2012 and 2013, leading Ofgem to act.
Wrath of Ofgem
Ofgem’s clampdown on the conduct of the Big Six Energy suppliers has been plain for all to see and the aforementioned delay was seen as “unacceptable” by the energy regulator.
“Thousands of households had to wait for energy efficiency measures, like insulation, to be installed during the winter. The payment reflects British Gas’s failure to meet its obligations on time but also recognises its commitment to put things right.” said Sarah Harrison, a senior partner at Ofgem.
Boost for Energy Efficiency
The money paid by British Gas will be pumped into energy efficiency and go towards helping vulnerable households enhance their properties through energy improvements. This will not only help homes to become more environmentally friendly but crucially, lower costs.
British Gas has responded positively, stating that although they missed their targets, they have continued to inject resource into energy efficiency and that their customers are ultimately better off. This, along with the extra funds being added via their fine has helped vulnerable British households further and meant that in excess of £110 million has eventually been freed up for energy efficiency.
More Energy Fines To Come?
The good news doesn’t end there for energy efficiency either. GDF/Suez, SSE and Scottish Power have all been probed by Ofgem regarding their energy efficiency efforts and the word on the street is that there will be fines to come in the run up to Christmas.
