10 ways to slash your business energy bills and boost staff productivity in one fell swoop

Unfortunately, our research shows that 43% of UK workers don’t feel that their current employer does enough to keep them engaged.

Introducing employee benefit schemes can be costly, and things could be about to get even more difficult.

The Government announced earlier this month that it would consult on the provision of salary sacrifice schemes, amid suggestions that the authorities are alarmed at just how much financial impact these tax breaks are having on the Exchequer. The consultation will run until October 19th 2016 and there are obvious concerns that the removal of tax incentives will force many companies to withdraw certain employee perks.

Perk 1) 12 games of “Team Breakout”

Why?

Some corporate away days are rubbish. The idea is to encourage teamwork and plenty of bonding, but more often than not they turn out to be a tad lame and awkward. Three-legged races and raft building are definitely passé in 2016.

However, you might find value in taking your teams to one of the growing number of “escape rooms” that are cropping up across the UK. In a nutshell, teams of five or six are given one hour to solve an array of riddles and puzzles in order to break out of a locked room. These can be genuinely taxing but fun at the same time, and teamwork is essential.

Cost?

Prices vary, but you can usually book a one-hour game for up to six people for less than £100. This means you can secure 12 games with the savings that you’ll make on your energy bills, making it ideal for a small company with a tight-knit workforce.

Perk 2) 3,828 health-boosting apples

Why?

Research undertaken by Fruitful Office showed that providing employees with fresh fruit can result in a 10% increase in productivity.

Okay, this was a study by a workplace fruit supplier, and so should be taken with a pinch of salt, but you don’t have to be an expert nutritionist to know that healthy staff who have a balanced diet are less likely to call in sick and will generally have higher energy levels than those who gorge on junk. It’s easy to see why so many businesses offer free fruit as an employee perk. Everyone’s a winner.

Cost?

You can buy a heck of a lot of apples, oranges and bananas with £1,225.27. A single apple costs around 30p, so you could provide your staff with 3,828 of them over the course of the year. So much wonderful vitamin C!

Perk 3) 7 stand-up desks

 

Why?

We’ve previously discussed how the design of your office can have a big impact on your employees’ productivity. More businesses are introducing stand-up desks into their offices to relieve some of the strain on those who don’t like to be sat down all day.

Installing stand-up desks can ensure your staff remain productive and free from back and neck injuries. Another win-win situation.

Cost?

You can get an adaptable desk that allows you to either sit or stand for £175 from Ikea. You can buy seven of these with the money you’ll save on your gas and electricity bills. 

Perk 4) 40 hours of personal training sessions

Why?

According to the Centre for Economic and Business Research, long-term sickness absence costs UK businesses £4.17 billion a year. Around a quarter of this figure can be attributed to absences caused by mental illnesses.

Regular exercise can help to prevent this. While free or discounted gym memberships are always a strong option, sometimes you need to give your employees a bit of guidance. As they say, you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make it drink. Hiring a personal trainer to devise routines for your staff could be a more effective employee perk.

Cost?

Prices can vary wildly, but the average PT will command an hourly fee of around £30. That means you can offer more than 40 hours of PT sessions to your staff over the course of a year thanks to the money you’ve shrewdly saved on your gas and electricity bills!

Perk 5) 1 luxury holiday to Cuba for your Employee of the Year

Why?

While there are some perks that should be offered to all staff, it’s worth having a few eye-catching prizes that are awarded to those who’ve excelled in one way or another. We all like to earn recognition for a job well done, and receiving a nice gift by way of reward is always nice.

Cost?

This one’s entirely up to you. Maybe you’ll set aside £100 at a time for the winners of your Employee of the Month award or perhaps you’re the kind of maverick who’ll go all gung-ho and pour the entire pot into a luxury holiday for your Employee of the Year. You can book a nice trip to Cuba for £1,200 and you could even throw in a few mojitos with the change.

Perk 6) 612 cups of Costa coffee

Why?

We all know that coffee makes us more alert and focused. Research also shows us that drinking four or five cups a day can cut our risk of developing Parkinson’s disease by nearly half.

Why not use your surplus cash to keep your employees well stocked with caffeine?

Cost?

A cup of coffee from a high street chain like Costa or Starbucks will cost you around £2 a go. That means you can pay for 612 cups for your staff over the course of the year.

Perk 7) 1 motivational speech from a minor celebrity

Why?

Sometimes your team just need a little bit of encouragement and perspective. If they can’t get this from a minor celebrity like flute beatboxer Nathan ‘Flutebox’ Lee, then we’re not sure where they’re going to get it from.

In all seriousness, you’ll be amazed at the famous (and semi-famous) personalities that go around businesses offering motivational speeches.

Cost?

You can have a look at some of the names here. While your £1,225.27 won’t stretch to iconic US astronaut Buzz Aldrin or boxing and grilling legend George Foreman - both of whom are prolific on the after-dinner speaking circuit by all accounts - there are a few motivational speakers who will fit into your budget.

Perk 8) 1 killer games room

 

Why?

A lot of creative companies have a games room for their staff, and this is something you can seriously think about now that you have so much extra cash at your disposal. Cost?

You can buy a decent pool table for around £400. Once you throw in a 42” HD screen for £400 and a PlayStation 4 (with game) for £300, you’re starting to piece together a tidy games room. Just add a few chairs and a hilariously large game of ‘Jenga’ to complete the project. 

Perk 9) 24 complimentary acupuncture sessions

Why?

Onsite acupuncture sessions are one of the quirkier employee benefits you’ll find, but if they’re good enough for Twitter, then who’s to say your staff won’t lap them up?

Evidence suggests that this unorthodox form of treatment can help to ease neck and lower back pain, headaches and even toothache. Remember, healthy employees are productive employees.

Cost?

You won’t be able to recruit a full-time acupuncturist, but you can use your energy bill savings to subsidise sessions for your staff. While initial consultations are a little more expensive (up to £70), you’ll find that each session thereafter costs in the region of £50.

Perk 10) 144 large Domino’s pizzas (Tuesday treats!)

 Why?

Because who doesn’t like pizza, right? Making use of Domino’s renowned ‘Two for Tuesday’ deal, you can treat your staff to many a free lunch over the course of the year. It’s only a really small perk, but if your staff are generally happy in other areas of their role, little things like this can provide the cherry atop your glorious employee engagement cake.

Cost?

A large pepperoni pizza usually costs £16.99, but we all know you get more bang for your buck when buying from Domino’s on a Tuesday.
