Meet the Winners! Bolton Market scoops ‘Super Saver’ prize in their second Love Energy Savings Awards win

Written by Love Energy Savings at 13:10

Now in their second year, the Love Energy Savings Awards have certainly attracted some hugely impressive entrants. So much so that the judges had some very difficult decisions to make when it came to picking the winners.

Aimed at businesses with more than 250 employees who consume energy on a large scale, the Super Saver category celebrates the bigger companies out there who continue to demonstrate their commitment to drastically reducing their energy usage. And this year’s winner is an old face that we’re very proud to welcome back.

Last year, Bolton Market bagged the top spot in the ‘Innovative Saver’ category, and this year they set their sights even higher, worked hard on their efficiency efforts and secured an Award for the second time.

After emerging victorious in the Super Saver category, Peter Entwistle, General Manager of Bolton Market, commented:

“It’s a great pleasure, shock, and honour to have won an award for the second year in a row. The Bolton Market team and traders work hard to keep our energy costs as low as possible, and we still feel we can go that little bit further to make even more improvements to our energy costs.”

The north west town of Bolton has gained a reputation for being home to one of the busiest and most popular markets in the country. Following a £4.5 million refurbishment in 2013, after being named the best food market in Britain in 2011, it has become home to more than 250 traders. People travel from miles around to browse the offerings, which can range from freshly caught fish and organic fruits and vegetables, to unique clothes and jewellery.

Where have they come from?

For their entry into the inaugural Love Energy Savings Awards last year, the management team at Bolton Market identified that one of their biggest sources of waste was cardboard. In a nutshell, their initial idea was to introduce a cardboard baler. When traders threw their cardboard waste inside, it would crush and compress the material so that it was almost 60% smaller than its usual volume. By creating small cubes that could be neatly stacked for pick up, the market was able to slash their waste disposal expenditure and make recycling easier.

Last year, Peter Entwistle predicted that they would save £12,000 over the year by cutting back their cardboard waste. In reality, they managed to save at least £17,000 on their waste bill.

What did they achieve in 2016?

Bolton Market’s complete refurbishment started three years ago, and was completed in 2015, but that hasn’t stopped them from taking even more steps to become more energy efficient. This year, their efforts - which helped them achieve a second Love Energy Savings Award - include…

- LED lighting introduced into all areas

- Motion sensors installed to control lights

- Old glass roof panels replaced with polycarbonate units to reflect heat in the summer and winter

- Solar panels fitted to two roof elevations

Peter told Love Energy Savings how much they expected to save because of their efforts:

“Considering we now have a 98% trader occupancy level compared to 86% occupancy level back in 2013, and the fact we now have over 650 workers compared to 400 in 2013 working in the market building, I was impressed to report a substantial saving! In the financial year 2014/2015, our electricity bill was £159,069. In the year 2016/2017 it will be £141,798, which is a massive saving of £17,271!”
