5 unusual energy-saving tips for your business this autumn

Written by Love Energy Savings at 11:39

Autumn is the season of change. It’s punctuated by red and orange leaves, “Back to School” signs in every supermarket, and the beginning of four-month-long Christmas advertising campaigns on TV.

With those lower temperatures and shorter days, the office heating is on more often and lights are on for longer. If you’re a business owner, you’ll need to change your energy habits to combat the extra demand that autumn puts on your bills.

That means thinking outside the box.

Below, we’ve outlined some easy and innovative ways of reducing your energy usage this autumn without getting left out in the cold.

1. Label switches and thermostats

Something as simple as a label switch could save you a lot of money.

One of the problems of having an office space is that there are often lots of different switches that employees need to navigate, so sometimes their safest bet is just to switch them all on at the same time — which obviously uses a lot of unnecessary energy.

If you label light switches and plugs, employees will know exactly which one does what, so they’ll only use the ones they need. This is especially useful for thermostats that control different sections of an office: no longer will staff ramp up the heat in the wrong part of the office in the hopes that it warms them up.

Speaking of thermostats…

2. Create an AC “dead band”

When you’re cold, it can be tempting to boost the temperature to a cosy 24 degrees — only later to realise that now it’s a little too hot in the office to work, and you’ll need to turn it down again.

To avoid this energy waste, set a “dead band” on your thermostat; that is, a temperature “sweet spot” range at which heating and AC are both switched off. Studies show that the optimum temperature to keep office workers comfortable and productive is about 22 degrees Celsius so that you could set your dead band between 19 and 24 degrees.

That way, you don’t have AC battling it out with the heating to get that perfect temperature — and costing you a bomb in the process.

3. Use draft excluders

Draft excluders might seem like something reserved for the sweltering homes of grandparents all around the country, but in the office, they’re a slice of energy-saving genius.

By using draft excluders in the office, it takes a lot less time for the room to warm up, and longer for the room to cool down. That means you only need the heating on for half as long without having to sacrifice the comfort of your team.

So next time you see your gran, congratulate her on how savvy she is with her energy costs.

4. Install light sensors

Some people can fall into the trap of battling the encroaching darkness of the autumn days by illuminating the office as much as possible.

But realistically, you don’t need all of the lights on all of the time.

A great way to counteract this is to install light sensors throughout the office. Light sensors ensure that a light only comes on when someone enters the room, and automatically switches off when that room is vacated. It means that you only spend money on lighting when you actually need to, which means significant savings for your business in the long run.

5. Hold a brainstorming session

One of the main obstacles preventing offices from saving energy is a lack of employee buy-in. To really maximise your savings, it needs to be a team effort.

You can get people invested in saving energy at the office by holding a team brainstorming session. Not only will asking your staff for energy-saving ideas help you find more innovative solutions to the problem; it’ll help them get invested into seeing those ideas through to fruition.

Make sure you give credit where it’s due for any ideas you end up implementing — it’ll serve as a good incentive for staff to put suggestions forward in the future.

For the best ideas on how to save on your energy bills, though, you should speak to the experts. At Love Energy Savings, we can help you save a vast sum on your business energy by helping you switch your energy provider. See how much you could save by switching today.
