Can schools change their energy provider?

Written by Love Energy Savings at 16:55

In UK schools, the levels of energy consumption, and in turn the price paid for energy, widely varies from institution to institution. This is due to the difference in the age of buildings, state of repair, occupancy hours and the types of equipment used.

However, all schools can take measures to reduce their energy costs, without compromising the comfort of students and staff. Simple but effective changes, like switching to a cheaper energy tariff,  can make a massive difference to your monthly bills.

Is it difficult for schools to change their energy provider?

Schools are facing a plethora of cuts in the current economic climate, so no institution can afford to be paying too much for their energy.

One of the easiest ways for schools to save money on their energy bills is to shop around for a better deal on their gas and electric. That may sound like hard work, but that’s where we can help. In fact, we can help schools find comprehensive quotes on school gas and electric in a matter of seconds!

All you need to do is give us some basic information, such as your location and current monthly bill rate, and our state-of-the-art comparison engine will find the best deals around for you.

What else can schools do to save money?

Once you’ve found a cheaper deal and switched, there are a few other things you can do to help save money on your energy bills each month:

Heating

Heating counts for about 50% of fuel use in a school but there are some simple ways to cut down on your usage:

- Do your research to find out how long it takes to heat the school each morning and cool down in the evening. This way you can adjust your heating so you’re not wasting any energy.

- Each one-degree drop in your thermostat temperature can reduce your energy bill by up to 3 %, so consider setting your thermostat a degree or two lower.

- Keep all windows and doors shut when the heating is on. If it gets too hot, you can simply reduce the temperature on the thermostat.

- To ensure heat is kept in the school, regularly check windows to ensure any cracks are fixed and all the seals around the windows are working.

Lighting

Lighting is another big cost when it comes to energy, but there are ways you can cut down your usage:

- Keep lights off in the daytime in rooms where there is natural light.

- Encourage everyone to turn off the lights when they leave a room.

- Choose energy-saving light bulbs where possible.

- Turn off any equipment that isn’t being used.

Getting students involved in sustainable energy initiatives is a great way to help you save money, but it also teaches them about the importance of looking after the environment. Start raising awareness of energy saving initiatives with posters, stickers and rewards throughout the school.
