British Gas News: Why have British Gas Business been fined £9.5m?

British Gas Business have been fined £9.5 million by the energy market watchdog, Ofgem, after coming clean about issues with its billing system. Following a £40 million IT revamp in 2014, which aimed to combine more than 100 old systems containing the details of British Gas business customers, some business gas and electricity customers failed to receive bills for up to 18 months.

After British Gas business customers complained, the energy provider submitted a report admitting to the failing. The issue has since been resolved and British Gas’ reviews improved with complaints falling by a third in 2016.

Working with Ofgem, British Gas have moved on to promote their new online billing system which seeks to improve efficiency and transparency for its business energy customers.

How will this affect British Gas Business energy customers?

After working with the independent energy watchdog, British Gas have taken huge steps forward in ensuring nothing like this ever happens again to British Gas electricity and gas customers. The energy supplier has since apologised for any delays or inaccuracies that business customers may have experienced and have confirmed that compensation will be paid to affected customers with a donation also being made to the Money Advice Trust, a charity which runs a debt advice line for businesses.

Since the report was filed, British Gas have hired an extra 350 members of staff to deal with complaints, so British Gas Business customers should rest assured that wheels are in motion to deal with any issues surrounding late or inaccurate billing.

British Gas shares have remained largely stable despite experiencing a slight decline over the last few days, demonstrating that the stock market is not punishing the supplier for its mistakes.

Should I switch energy supplier?

British Gas Business tariffs are some of the most competitive in the industry, but it is always worth checking the market to see if there are any cheaper business electricity or gas deals out there.

Last year we conducted research and discovered that UK SMEs had overpaid on their business electricity by £2.2 billion over the last five years – equating to an average of nearly £1,400 per year for every business that failed to switch.
