First UK Centre for Fracking Training Confirmed as Blackpool and The Fylde College

It’s been a while since we covered fracking here at the Love Energy Savings News Centre, following a summer which saw the topic covered a great deal as well as our popular Ultimate Guide to Fracking. In the last week, news has emerged that Blackpool and The Fylde College has been confirmed as the official UK college and training centre for fracking; a move that makes a lot of sense with much of the shale gas drilling to date taking place in the area.

The move was confirmed by the government via Mathew Hancock, the Minister of State for Business, Enterprise and Energy who revealed the details at the colleges Bispham campus. It will operate as the National College for Onshore Oil and Gas and leaves little doubt that the government will continue to support plans for fracking going forward. Other institutions across the UK will be allowed the chance to act as “spokes” for the college and support the training of effective shale gas drilling.

Degrees In Fracking...

Students deciding to undertake the courses will be able to qualify themselves up to honours degree level for engineers and technicians. Although opposers to fracking are unlikely to support the move, they will perhaps be able to take some solace from the fact that experts in safe and responsible fracking will emerge in the future and reduce the likelihood in any damage to the environment in the UK as a result of fracking.

The north-west branch of Friends of the Earth has already voiced its concerns, implying that the funds could have been better spent on energy sectors such as save, tidal and solar instead of “dead-end fossils”. Critics of the process are still of the opinion that the government has oversold the benefits of drilling for shale gas and there have been protests in areas such as Manchester, Lancashire and West Sussex where the majority of future fracking is likely to take place.
