As we reported back in November of last year, Big Six heavyweights Scottish Power have been under increasing pressure from Ofgem to clean up their act with regard to customer satisfaction and this has culminated in an unprecedented sales ban from the energy watchdog.

As part of its probe into the conduct of the Big Six energy suppliers, Ofgem threatened the supplier with such a ban several months ago and it seems that the required improvements have not been made in time.



Despite vowing to take last year’s criticism on the chin and put their customers at the top of the agenda, more complaints have followed with some customers claiming they have been unable to contact Scottish Power, often to claim funds they are owed. With a huge backlog of complaints building up and thousands of pounds owed to energy customers, Ofgem has stayed true to its word and suspended the supplier from selling any energy products until they are satisfied these problems have been ironed out.

As part of previous reprimands from Ofgem, Scottish Power has also been required to publish the progress of its customer complaint handling on their website. Although this suggests that progress has been made, you can see clearly that there is still a great deal of overdue live bills and complaints waiting to be resolved. Problems had previously been attributed to the implementation of a new computer system, although one wonders how long this can be used as a legitimate excuse.

Although Scottish Power can often be the best option for your business or home energy and are a supplier we will continue to work closely with, we can’t help but applaud this move from Ofgem as it continues to look to clean up the marketplace.
