UK Business Energy Statistics 2025: What the Data Can Tell Us

Ofgem asked over 1,000 UK businesses how they're getting on with their energy.

The results are worth knowing about, whether you're struggling with bills, thinking about switching, or just want to know where you stand.

Here's what they found.

A guide on the latest Ofgem Business Energy 2025 statistics.

Are UK businesses struggling with energy bills?

27% of businesses said they're struggling with their energy bills in some way. If that's you, the most likely reason is that you're on the wrong deal.

Out-of-contract rates, deemed tariffs, and contracts that rolled over without a proper review are the usual culprits. None of them is a stuck situation.

A quick comparison is all it takes to see what you could be paying instead.

Are UK businesses happy with their energy supplier?

Satisfaction is up. 68% of businesses are happy with their supplier's service, the highest it's been since Ofgem started tracking it. But only 57% feel they're treated fairly.

The businesses that don't are most commonly dealing with unexpected charges, unclear tariff changes, and problems that take too long to resolve. If that sounds familiar, it's a sign your supplier isn't working hard enough for you.

How easy is it to switch business energy supplier?

This is probably the most useful thing in the whole report. Of the businesses that switched supplier in the last year, 75% said they found it easy. You don't need to contact your existing supplier.

Most business energy switches complete within 28 days. The whole process is handled for you. The data's pretty clear: the anticipation is worse than the reality.

Is using a business energy broker worth it?

Of the 35% of businesses that used a broker, 72% came away satisfied. They described their broker as knowledgeable, responsive, and said they felt they got a good deal. That's what getting proper support looks like in practice.

Are UK businesses going green?

The shift towards greener energy is one of the more encouraging trends in the 2025 data. Fewer businesses are citing cost as a reason not to decarbonise, and more are saying nothing is stopping them at all.

Here's how that's changed over the last three years.

2023 24% 32%
2024 27% 21%
2025 41% 15%

The trend is consistent. Green energy options are getting more accessible, and the cost barrier is shrinking year on year.

What should your business do next?

The data tells a pretty clear story. Businesses that compare their options and get the right support tend to end up in a better position. If you haven't looked at your energy recently, it takes less than 30 seconds to see what's out there.

Business energy switching FAQs

  • How do I know if I'm on a bad energy deal?

The simplest way is to compare. If your contract has ended and you haven't renewed, you're likely on an out-of-contract rate, which is almost always higher than what's available on the open market. Run a quick comparison and you'll see immediately whether you could be paying less.

  • How long does switching business energy take?

Most business energy switches complete within 28 days. You don't need to contact your existing supplier. Once you've chosen a deal, the process is managed for you from start to finish. Find out more about business energy renewals.

  • Do I need a broker to get a good deal?

No, but it helps. Ofgem's 2025 research found that 72% of businesses that used a broker were satisfied with the outcome. A good energy broker does the legwork, knows the market, and makes sure you're comparing the right options for your business size and usage.

  • Is switching business energy risky?

According to Ofgem's 2025 data, 75% of businesses that switched said they found the process easy. Your supply won't be interrupted. The switch happens in the background, and you're notified when it's complete.

  • Can I still switch if I'm mid-contract?

You can still compare. It's worth knowing what's out there even if you can't switch immediately. Some contracts allow early exits, and knowing your options ahead of renewal means you're not making a rushed decision when the time comes. See all business energy deals.
