How Is Energy Supplied When I Move To A New Building?

When you turn on the lights for the first time in your new premises, the previous tenant’s business energy supplier provides the electricity.

The previous tenant should have told their business electricity and gas supplier that they were moving. So, hopefully, they will know! But you should still contact them as soon as possible upon moving in and give them your meter readings. This will ensure you only pay for the electricity and gas you use.

The existing business energy contract stands until you change to a new business energy supplier. You will have access to gas and electricity, but as you are not in a contract, they will charge you very high ‘Out of Contract’ rates.

What Are Out-Of-Contract Energy Prices?

When you move into your new premises and you haven't got an energy contract sorted, you aren't stuck in the dark. The previous tenants' energy supplier will still provide you with electricity and gas, but because you're not in a contract you'll be charged extremely high prices, known as an 'out of contract' rate. Now is your opportunity to find the best deal on the market and get the cheapest energy prices available, you're not restricted to the previous tenants' supplier either.

Can I Transfer My Current Business Energy Tariff To A New Premises?

This is often not possible but speak to your current business energy supplier to check. Most likely, you will need to take out a new contract.

You can do that with Love Energy Savings and compare business energy prices today. We search all the major business energy tariffs to find the best deal for your company.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What happens to my energy supply when I move into new business premises?

When you move in, the previous tenant's supplier will continue to provide energy until you set up a new contract. You'll be on what's known as a deemed or out-of-contract rate during this period, which is typically much higher than a standard tariff. Take a meter reading on the day you move in and contact the existing supplier as soon as possible to register your details.

  • How do I avoid out-of-contract energy rates when moving premises?

The best way is to sort your energy contract before you move in. If you know your move date in advance, you can compare business energy deals and arrange for a new tariff to start from day one. If you're already in the new premises, compare and switch as soon as possible. Every day on an out-of-contract rate costs more than it needs to.

  • Can I keep my existing business energy tariff when I move?

Sometimes. It depends on your current supplier and contract terms. Some suppliers will allow you to transfer your existing tariff to a new address, though this is not guaranteed and the rates may change based on your new location and meter. It's worth comparing what else is available at the same time, as moving premises is one of the best opportunities to make sure you're on the right deal.

  • Which energy suppliers have change of tenancy forms?

Most major UK business energy suppliers have a process for handling changes of tenancy, though not all offer a downloadable form. Some require you to call or submit a request through their website. We've listed the forms and contact routes for all major suppliers above. If you can't find your supplier, get in touch and we'll point you in the right direction.

  • How long does a business energy change of tenancy take?

It varies by supplier. If you're registering with the existing supplier as a new tenant, it can be straightforward and quick. If you're switching to a new supplier at the same time, the switch typically takes around 28 days from the date your contract is confirmed. Starting the process early, ideally before you move in, avoids any period on out-of-contract rates.

  • Do I need my MPAN or MPRN to arrange a change of tenancy?

It helps, but you don't always need them to get started. Your MPAN is your electricity meter reference number and your MPRN is the equivalent for gas. Both are usually on a recent bill or on the meter itself. If you're moving into new premises and don't have access to either, your supplier or network operator can usually locate them using your address.

  • What is a deemed energy contract and how do I get out of one?

A deemed contract is what you're placed on automatically when you move into premises with no energy agreement in place. Rates on deemed contracts are set by the supplier and are typically significantly higher than contracted rates. To get out of one, compare business energy deals and switch to a fixed or variable tariff as soon as possible. Find out more about deemed contracts and how they work.
