Business Energy Saving Tips In 2023

We’ve all seen the news about rising energy prices, but we have seen little coverage of the challenges businesses are facing. We’ve created this top business energy-saving tips guide to help you become more energy efficient and save money.

Energy prices are at an all-time high thanks to the current energy crisis. Due to this, it’s essential that businesses save energy wherever they can in order to reduce costs. There are many ways in which you can save energy at your company, and luckily, many of them are simple.

Like most things, every little helps, and when multiplied, measures can have an even larger impact on your energy saving. Below, we list a number of energy-saving tips to help you reduce your business energy consumption and cut costs. Doing two or three of these simple measures can add up to much larger savings, especially if every person in your business makes a small effort to contribute to saving on gas and electricity usage.

Our Top Tips For Energy Saving

Below, we outline our top tips for saving energy in your business. Energy saving, as well as ensuring that you choose a suitable energy tariff, can help you get greater control over your energy usage and your overhead costs.

Find out how you can reduce your business gas and electricity consumption here:

1. Dress for the occasion

This goes for all seasons. During winter, wearing a sweater to work means you’ll be able to turn the heating down in your office. Likewise, wearing thinner attire during the summer and cracking a window open can help to reduce your reliance on air conditioning. These simple measures can help you lower your energy use and your bills, as well as reduce your business’s carbon footprint.

2. Install Office or Shop Thermostats

If you don’t currently have thermostats installed to monitor temperatures in rooms, offices, or the shop floor or workshop of your business, getting one fitted could reduce your gas and electricity bill. It could also lower your carbon footprint by approximately 280kg a year.

3. Switch off standby mode

You should always encourage staff to turn appliances like laptops, chargers and printers off at the switch instead of leaving them on standby mode. A significant amount of energy is wasted on what is known as “phantom power” each year. Phantom power is the electricity used by appliances when they are left in standby mode. It was previously reported that if everyone in the UK turned their PCs off overnight instead of leaving them on standby, it would save potentially more than £ 30 million across the UK on business energy bills. Plus, with energy rates on the rise, this figure is likely to increase significantly.

4. Draught-proof your working space

A simple yet highly effective energy-saving measure. Sealing any holes or cracks in door and window frames can help you save money on your gas bill. Draught-proofing helps to prevent warm air from escaping from your offices in the winter, it also stops cold air from entering. This measure also helps to keep your rooms cool during the summertime.

5. Avoid Covering Radiators and Remember to Bleed them!

You should avoid placing desks or furniture in front of radiators, as they’ll absorb heat and make your radiators less efficient at heating rooms and offices. This might require you to reshuffle a few things in your office, but this will be more than worth it once you see the difference in your temperatures and your energy bills. Bleeding your radiators periodically can also help to keep them as efficient as possible and help to prevent energy wastage.

6. Put Foil behind your Radiators

This may seem like a silly idea, but a simple way of saving energy is to put a sheet of foil behind your radiators to reflect the heat back into your business space, making your radiator more efficient as less heat is lost through the wall.

7. Close the Doors

Remember, you only need to heat rooms that are in use. By shutting the doors, the warmth will stay in the rooms that you want to be heated. This way you’ll save money on your energy bill by ensuring that energy isn’t being wasted elsewhere. If you have a meeting room that is being used in the afternoon, leave the heating off until shortly before everyone arrives to save energy.

8. Insulate your Business

This is a big energy-saving tip - If you have a small office, loft insulation typically costs around £250 and over the course of a year can save you £145*, so after 2 years you’ll be seeing a return on your investment. For peace of mind, you’re also reducing your CO2 emissions by 730kg per year. There are a lot of schemes on the market that offer to insulate your business for free.

9. Energy Saving LED Light Bulbs

By using energy-saving LED light bulbs, you can reduce your energy consumption significantly. This is an effective measure for businesses of all sizes. Even if you only have 15 bulbs in your entire building you could save around an extra £45 a year, which isn’t bad considering all you have to do is order a different box of bulbs when you’re picking up business utilities. LEDs are also long-lasting in comparison to standard incandescent light bulbs – they can last up to 50,000 hours in operation! This means that you can not only cut your energy costs with LEDs, but you can also reduce your purchase costs as you won’t have to replace them as often.

10. Turn down your Thermostat

Turning your heating down by just a few degrees can make a great difference to your energy bills. In an office, turning down a room thermostat by just one degree could allow you to save around £55* a year and reduce your carbon footprint by around 230kg. A room temperature of between 18 degrees to 21 degrees is usually ideal. So, aim to turn your thermostat down to the lowest comfortable temperature for your staff can help to reduce costs.

11. Use Modern Energy Efficient Appliances

Modern appliances are much more energy efficient than those that were made 10-15 years ago. If your fridge, dishwasher, boiler or microwave are old, consider replacing them to boost energy efficiency and reduce costs. With energy costs rising, the last thing you want in your business is inefficient appliances. Modern appliances are given energy labels to identify their energy efficiency rating – be sure to look out for these when making new purchases for your company.

12. Consider Switching Your Other Business Utilities

Many UK businesses are switching water, telecoms, business broadband and waste collection services to offset the increases in business energy prices.
