How to cancel a broadband contract

It is widely known that new customers get the best broadband offers. It pays to regularly compare broadband deals. If you find a great deal, you may be wondering if you can cancel your broadband contract.

The simple answer is yes. But it is complicated. If you’re tied into a contract you will be liable to pay early termination fees. There are instances when it is beneficial to pay these fees. There are also periods when you can cancel without being penalised.

Cancelling my broadband contract without fees

If you have recently selected a new deal but you have come across a better deal, you can cancel within the first 14 days. This is called a cooling-off period. You will not be charged a termination fee.

Broadband contracts are usually 12, 18 or 24 months. Some of the smaller broadband providers offer pay-as-you-go deals. You can also get 30-day agreements, although they are less common. Each provider has slightly different charges when it comes to cancelling contracts. Information about these charges can be found below for some of the most popular suppliers.

What other exceptions are there:

  • It’s one month until the end of your contract. You can serve notice and switch suppliers without charge.
  • The terms of your contract change. Broadband providers sometimes increase monthly payments. They will always write to you to tell him. You will then have 30 days to let them know if you wish to cancel. You will not be charged for terminating the agreement.
  • Ofcom is the regulator for telecommunication companies. Their policies state if you have an issue with your provider, you have the right to switch. If you can demonstrate, your supplier is in breach of contract, you can cancel for free. This includes a consistent lack of internet access. It is sensible to make a note of your communication with your provider. You can contact the Communications Ombudsman for support.
